Intermediate filaments are found only in complex multicellular organisms. They are encoded by a large number of different genes and can be grouped into families based on their amino acid sequences. Cells in different tissues of the body express one or another of these genes at different times.

They are composed of a family of related proteins sharing common structural and sequence features. These filaments were named intermediate because their diameter of about 10 nm is intermediate between the diameters of the thick and thin filaments in striated muscles (see Figs. 39-3 and 39-8). Cytoplasmic intermediate filaments tend to cluster into wavy bundles that vary in compactness, forming a branching network between the plasma membrane and the nucleus. this video provides a quick overview of intermediate filament structure and function also it describes how they are physiologically relevant. Intermediate filaments are composed of a family of related proteins sharing common structural and sequence features. Initially designated 'intermediate' because their average diameter (10 nm ) is between those of narrower microfilaments (actin) and wider myosin filaments found in muscle cells, the diameter of intermediate filaments is now commonly compared to actin microfilaments (7 nm) and Intermediate filaments.

They are the most diverse group of cytoskeletal elements. The contractile proteins actin and myosin, together with the structural proteins ( e.g., titin and nebulin) and intermediate filaments, create a solid and efficient  Which is a type of intermediate filament found in epithelial cells?

However, intermediate filaments do not act individually into the neural cells. Our results evidence the importance of misregulated cytoskeletal crosstalk in disrupting cytoskeletal dynamics and cell morphology underlying neural dysfunction in experimental conditions mimicking metabolic diseases and nongenomic actions of thyroid hormones and as an end point in the neurotoxicity of organic

Cells in different tissues of the body express one or another of these genes at different times. Intermediate filaments are composed of linear subunits that wrap around each other and interact very tightly. Structurally, as mentioned previously, all intermediate laments start from a fibrous subunit (Figure \ (\PageIndex {2}\)). This then coils around another filamentous subunit to form a coiled-coil dimer, or protofilament. Intermediate filaments: structure, types, functions Content:.

Intermediate filaments are present in most animal cells. They are composed of more than 50 proteins which are expressed in a cell‐type specific manner.

Intermediate filaments were originally named because with diameters between 8 and 10 nm, they are intermediate in size between the microtubules (at 25 nm) and the microfilaments at 7 nm. These intermediate filaments are composed of a number of different proteins.
